HI! Today I had to wake up really early to go for a field trip at pulau ubin to watch birds. I initially dreaded going there knowing how much we were going to walk based on past experiences going to ubin given the fact that we're not allowed to take bicycles. BUT, I think its one of the best experience so far! HAHA. Sound damn geeky and all but the birds in singapore like all damn cool. People (well most people) think that only got crows and mynahs and sparrows. Btw, crows also got different type of crows yknow. HAHA.
Okay, I just want to share some interesting facts that my TA told us. It helps the information get stuck in my brain anyway!
So, we reached ubin and we saw kingfishers, starling, crows, mynahs, magpie, swifts, swallows, sunbirds, white-rumped sharma and eagles and many more I just can't remember right now.
Oh, one of the first few birds that we saw was the hornbill.

so I got the photo from the wild singapore website. Unfortunately I didn't bring any camera with me cause the book and binoculars were already a handful.
Anyway, the hornbill story was rather interesteing to me. We saw two hornbills, a male and female. The female is significantly smaller than the male. The interesting part is, the way they breed! In the wild the find a cavity in the tree and the female will lay their eggs inside and the male will cover up the entrance of the cavity with mud leaving a little slit. During this time the female will be forever with the eggs guarding them, and the male will search for food and gives the food through the small slit. And the female will also moult. It will shed its flight feathers so its completely vulnerable. But its nature and the male may not come back, cause it might get poached along the way. AND, the male sometimes have concubines. HAHAHAH, so it may not have enough energy to feed the different females sufficiently.
Eh disclaimer, this is what I remembered from what I learnt in ubin, it might not be completely accurate if you really wanna know you should just GOOGLE.
Okay next, I saw eagles!! Eagles how awesome tell me. I never knew eagles existed in singapore. SO NOW WE KNOW!
We heard bulbuls, but never got a chance to have a good look at it to identify its species. Bulbuls make such a nice bubbly sounds. HAHA, I think so far its my favourite bird call. The oriental Magpie robin sings nice too! Its quite cute and its rather easy to see. There were a few like hopping around like a family of them.
I don't know how my TA remembers all the bird calls and their species and their family and all. Its like his brain is just this vast amount of knowlegde it makes mine feel empty. And, he is only a masters student in this field. Imagine my lecturers amount of knowledge in their brains. Wowweee.
I shouldn't waste too much time blogging. Back to lodish and cell biology then.
Like a geek. Sigh.
